Research Associate for the Project “Volcanism in the Vesturdjúp Basin” § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Your responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

We are looking for a highly motivated postdoc for our "Marine Geophysics" group at Universität Hamburg. The aim of the project is to investigate the interaction between tectonic and underwater volcanism in the Vesturdjúp Basin between Iceland and Greenland, as well as the eruption processes. Multi-channel seismic and hydroacoustic data are available for this purpose and will have been measured by the time the project starts. The project is a cooperation between the Universität Hamburg, the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel GEOMAR, the University of Gdansk, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST), and the University of Reykjavik.

The successful candidate will process the reflection seismic data down to deep migration. Based on seismic attributes, including the diffraction energy, the volcanic deposits will be characterized and compared with those in other volcanic regions. For the temporal classification, the attributes will be used to infer glacio-eustatic sea level fluctuations. The data will be interpreted in a geological context and published.

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field, plus doctorate.

Applicants should have an MSc in Geophysics and a good knowledge of marine geology. Requirements are excellent skills in the processing of reflection seismic data, in geophysical research at sea, and successful publications in peer reviewed journals. Experience in both industry and academia as well as a very good command of English are an advantage.
