Research Associate Islamic Theology with a Focus on Islamic Textual Studies § 28 Subsection 1 HmbHG

Your responsibilities

Research associates will be expected primarily to teach and conduct research. The research associate will also have the opportunity to pursue further academic qualifications, in particular a doctoral dissertation. At least one-third of set working hours will be made available for the research associate’s own academic work.

The Institute for Islamic Theology is part of the newly established Department of Religions within the Faculty of Humanities. The institute is currently in the process of being established and offers a dynamic and engaging work environment. You will be affiliated with the Professorship for Islamic Theology, with a focus on research and teaching in the field of Islamic textual studies (Qur’an and Hadith). Your responsibilities include:

  • teaching (2 teaching hours per week) and other teaching-related duties, with a focus on Islamic textual studies
  • contributing to research activities at the Professorship of Islamic Theology, including participation in third-party funding applications
  • assisting in the organization of events
  • engaging in the institute’s internationalization efforts, including contributing to the development of international collaborations (with a focus on the Middle East)
  • contributing to the establishment and development of the institute

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

Required qualifications:

  • a completed degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Islamic Theology or a related field
  • excellent proficiency in English and Arabic, proficiency in German is an asset
  • a proposed PhD project in Islamic textual studies, including a corresponding research proposal

Preferred qualifications:

  • teaching experience in Islamic Theology
  • international experience, particularly in academic collaboration
