Junior Professorship (W1) with Tenure Track leading to W2 for Jewish Studies

Responsibilities

The Faculty of Humanities is seeking a junior professor with tenure track (W1TTW2) of Jewish studies. The professor is responsible for teaching and research in the field of Jewish studies, and must have a focus on at least one of the following research areas:

  • rabbinic literature
  • medieval biblical exegesis
  • material cultures (manuscript studies and printed works)
  • intellectual exchange processes and the history of entanglement in ancient, medieval and/or early modern Judaism

In addition to research and teaching in the field of Jewish studies with the abovementioned focus, the professorship also requires:

  • teaching in all Jewish studies degree programs (bachelor’s and master’s degree programs)
  • an active role in training of prospective school teachers of Religion
  • a thematic compatibility to the Manuscript Cultures core research area

Your profile

This junior professorship is aimed at early career researchers. We are looking for a candidate with an outstanding academic track record and research experience in the professorship field.

We expect:

  • relevant publications in the abovementioned research areas, e.g., also the unpublished dissertation
  • high-level proficiency in Hebrew and English

We also expect:

  • an outstanding doctorate in Jewish Studies / Judaic Studies or a related field.
  • proficiency in German to (C1) level. Language proficiency may be obtained within the first 2 years of employment. The University of Hamburg is happy to assist you.
  • less than 4 years since completing the doctorate (parental and care leave periods granted a standard period of 2 years per child); the junior professor will be evaluated prior to the end of their posting to ascertain whether they fulfill the requirements for a tenured professorship.

Ideally, you will also have:

  • initial experience in acquiring external funding and carrying out externally funded projects
  • proficiency in another language relevant for the field
