Research Associate for the Project “Cluster of Excellence ‚CUI: Advanced Imaging of Matter‘- Imaging and crystallography of molecular dynamics § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Your responsibilities

In the period from 01.08.2024 until 31.12.2025, duties primarily include teaching and research. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

In the period from 01.01.2026 until 31.07.2026, duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

Intense coherent X-ray beams, combined with novel X-ray optics of high numerical aperture, open up new opportunities for ab initio phasing of macromolecular crystals and nanoparticles to recover information about their dynamics. This project aims to develop strategies, methods, and algorithms for time-resolved convergent-beam crystallography and Bragg ptychography using synchrotron radiation and X-ray free-electron laser pulses.

The tasks of this position are to:

  • develop and test new approaches and algorithms for the analysis of convergent-beam diffraction of macromolecular crystals, molecular crystals, and nanoparticles
  • optimise convergent-beam diffraction experiments at synchrotron and XFEL sources
  • develop and test new experimental methods to obtain time-resolved diffraction data from macromolecular crystals and other systems
  • contribute to execution, analysis and developments of imaging experiments of the group
  • communicate findings in written and oral form
  • teach four teaching hours per week during teaching times (4LVS) in the period from 01.08.2024 until 31.12.2025

Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

  • a PhD in physics, materials science, optics, or similar, or a strong record in scientific work equivalent to a PhD degree (having passed the oral defence at least)
  • a strong background in modern coherent diffractive imaging, especially Bragg ptychography, and knowledge of diffraction physics, data analysis, and crystallography
  • self-motivated and work well in an interdisciplinary team environment
  • excellent interpersonal skills and a friendly nature
  • good communication skills in English
