The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at Universität Hamburg and DESY.

Support and enable research in the field of particle and astroparticle physics by organizing laboratory operations for detector development and undertaking a range of technical and engineering tasks within the group.

  • design and implementation of sophisticated experimental setups including characterization of detectors for particle and astroparticle physics with radioactive sources
  • design, planning (including structural analysis), CAD construction, assembly and commissioning of experiments; optimization of designs and procedures, including costs
  • development of new readout systems; working with analog and integrated electronics; design, construction, assembly of printed circuit boards
  • design, maintenance, operation of extreme-low radiation electrical formation setups; support operations with required simulations
  • design, construction, maintenance of gas systems (including recirculation and recuperation methods) and high vacuum systems
  • perform technical work, e.g. soldering, also in clean room environments
  • maintaining inventory of equipment, supplies, etc.; procurement and purchase orders; liaison with vendors regarding equipment procurement, specifications, design, repairs, etc
  • organize and maintain documentation of project procedures and laboratory operations and related dissemination; share lessons learned as needed; communicate with partners and related travel

  • university degree (Bachelor or equivalent) preferably with specialisation in physical engineering or physics

Required skills and personal qualities:

  • knowledge of 3D CAD software and design, measurement and control engineering
  • experience with electronics
  • knowledge of computing and common programming languages
  • experience with vacuum technology and gas systems
  • additional work experience in relevant fields is an advantage

Universität Hamburg—University of Excellence is one of the strongest research educational institutions in Germany. Our work in research, teaching, educational and knowledge exchange activities is fostering the next generation of responsible global citizens ready to tackle the global challenges facing us. Our guiding principle “Innovating and Cooperating for a Sustainable Future” drives collaboration with academic and nonacademic partner institutions in the Hamburg Metropolitan Region and around the world. We would like to invite you to be part of our community to work with us in creating sustainable and digital change for a dynamic and pluralist society.

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg promotes equal opportunity between the sexes. In accordance with Section 7 subsection 1 of the Hamburg equal opportunity act (Hamburgisches Gesetz zur Gleichstellung von Frauen und Männern im öffentlichen Dienst, HmbGleiG) we expressly call for women to apply. Equally qualified women applicants will receive preference in the selection process.

We explicitly encourage persons with an immigrant background to apply.

Severely disabled and disabled applicants with the same status will receive preference over equally qualified non-disabled applicants.
