Research Associate for the Project “Cluster of Excellence Quantum Universe” in Higgs Physics with the CMS experiment § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Your responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

The Cluster of Excellence “Quantum Universe” performs research to understand mass and gravity at the interface between quantum physics and cosmology. The research team includes leading scientists from mathematics, particle physics, astrophysics, and cosmology at the University of Hamburg and DESY.

A position is offered in the CMS Collaboration, on the measurement of the Higgs trilinear coupling using Run 3 data. The project will be carried out in close collaboration with the DESY CMS Higgs group.

Postdoctoral research associates will become members of the Quantum Universe Research School (QURS), which provides academic and key skills training, as well as career planning support. In addition, they will receive individual budgets to facilitate the attendance of summer schools and conferences, and to support other educational measures. Additional travel money for project-specific duties will be provided by the hosting research groups. Postdoctoral research associates may participate in the supervision of doctoral researchers, teaching at the University, and in the organization of the Cluster via an early career council.


Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

At least two years of research at the level of a PhD in a relevant field.

The following requirements should be fulfilled:

  • excellent knowledge of physics at the LHC, preferably Higgs physics
  • excellent knowledge of the CMS software and statistical tools
  • excellent programming in C++ and python
  • excellent English in speaking and writing
  • Teamwork abilities and proven record of a successful collaboration in an analysis research project
