The oceanic surface mixed layer is a key part of the climate system. Accurately simulating this turbulent boundary layer is critical in improving climate model performance. The successful candidate will use Large Eddy Simulations (LES) in order to study the impact of resolved turbulence on the large-scale flow. Special focus will be given on frontal instabilities associated with turbulence driven frontogenesis. The role of surface waves in such a dynamical regime will be explored. The project aims for a better understanding and improved parameterisations of these processes which are unresolved in current global climate models. The candidate will be part of the “Theoretical Oceanography” group and the Research Training Group “ENERGY” which offers dedicated training courses, seminars and mentoring.
