Research Associate for the Project “SemaSign” for research on German Sign Language (DGS) § 28 Subsection 3 HmbHG

Your responsibilities

Duties include academic services in the project named above. Research associates may also pursue independent research and further academic qualifications.

These qualifications include pursuing a PhD or postdoctoral research. Specific duties in this ERC-funded ‚SemaSign‘ project (Project Lead: Dr. Hope E. Morgan) include undertaking data collection of German Sign Language (DGS) with fluent signers; managing data collection records; annotating DGS signs; analysis of semantic data; and pursuing original research in German Sign Language.


Your profile

A university degree in a relevant field.

The candidate must be highly fluent in German Sign Language (DGS). The candidate must either have a Master’s Degree in linguistics, DGS, or deaf studies. Or, if the MA/MSc is in another eld (such as interpreting, anthropology, education, special education, psychology, cognitive science, computational linguistics etc.), then the candidate should have written a master’s thesis on a topic that aligns with sign language linguistics or deaf studies. The cover letter should address how the candidate’s background fits with the project.

Additional assets: English reading and writing skills (flexibility is given to deaf DGS signers), experience with Apple Mac computers and video editing software, previous experience in collecting language data, experience working in deaf-hearing teams, willingness to travel.

The Research Associate will be given their own workspace at IDGS and a laptop computer for the duration of the position. At IDGS, the Research Associate joins a deaf-friendly research community with expertise in sign language linguistics and access to state-of-the-art equipment and technology.
